The Associate (1996) - Synopsis:

“After stock analyst Laurel Ayres loses a promotion to the man she TRAINED, she realizes that one thing is preventing her from moving up the corporate ladder: her gender. Fed-up, Laurel quits the firm and starts her own company. Unfortunately, people still don’t take her seriously, so she invents a male associate named Robert S. Cutty, who “offers” sound financial advice through Laurel. As a result, Laurel’s company takes off. But soon, EVERYBODY wants to meet the mysterious Robert S. Cutty, from her former employers to a nosy gossip columnist. At wit’s end, Laurel, who’s Black, decides to don makeup and pose as Cutty — who’s white. Can Laurel pull off this unusual charade? And if so, for how long?”

First, I love this movie and you can learn so much from it. This movie not only is sentimental but it can bring a lot of encouragement for a new business owner.

First you have to realize when you are in business for yourself, you need to take chances and believe in yourself that you can do whatever you set your mind to. It maybe hard at first but once you start learning and getting more business things tend to get a little bit easier. :) Remember in the movie Laurel quit her job after her co-worker took all the credit for her work and got the promotion? So after she quit she opened up her firm, even though initially no one gave her a chance.

You need to go after your goal consistently. Laurel called all her contacts and almost gave up but then she was given a chance to prove herself.

Try new things to get results. In the movie, Laurel made up a character named Cutty to get her business noticed but it brought her a lot of results.

In the end, Laurel got the recognition she deserved and made millions from her business by being herself.

Good Movie. I have probably watched it a dozen times already since it came out in 1996. :D

Other Good Movies for Inspration:

The Pursuit of Happyness - (2006) starring Will Smith

Working Girl - (1988) starring Melanie Griffith
